Are you considering an abortion?

Before considering an abortion, confirm your pregnancy with a test. Missed periods or other symptoms may have various causes. Schedule an appointment with us for a pregnancy test and support.

If your test is positive, an ultrasound is essential to gather critical information such as viability, gestational age, and proper placement of the pregnancy, all of which inform you of your options.

Contact us to discuss your choices and arrange an ultrasound. All services are free and confidential to protect your privacy.

If you are considering an abortion, it is important to remember that abortion is a medical procedure. You should be informed about the type of procedure, the associated risks, and other relevant facts to make a well-informed decision.

Things to Consider:
  • The types of abortion procedures available to you.
  • Your legal rights with abortion providers.
  • Potential short-term or long-term risks involved.
  • The father’s insistence on an abortion.
  • Readiness for parenthood.
  • Confidentiality regarding your pregnancy.
  • Emotional and financial support from your partner.

We understand how you feel, and you are not alone. Some of our staff have experienced similar situations. If you are contemplating an abortion, it is essential to know:

  • Are you truly pregnant?
  • Is your pregnancy typical, or are you at risk for a natural miscarriage or a tubal pregnancy that requires immediate medical attention?
  • How far along is your pregnancy?

Abortion Pill

The abortion pill is a method of early pregnancy termination using two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, within the first 10 weeks. Mifepristone lowers the progesterone levels, which are needed to maintain the pregnancy. The second drug is misoprostol, which induces contractions, causing cramping and bleeding. If considering taking the abortion pill you should learn about side effects, what to expect, restrictions, and recovery. Confirm your eligibility and how far along you are before deciding with an ultrasound. We offer free ultrasounds to confirm pregnancy viability and detect ectopic pregnancies. While we do not provide or refer for abortions, we give information so you can make an informed choice.

To ensure your safety, please consider the following steps:

  • Confirm your pregnancy. Have you taken a pregnancy test? Have you had an ultrasound? It is crucial to confirm that you are pregnant before considering any further actions, as some women may seek abortion unnecessarily. If you are unsure whether you are pregnant, we offer free pregnancy testing.
  • Verify that your ultrasound confirms the pregnancy is developing within your uterus. The abortion pill is ineffective for ectopic pregnancies, which require immediate medical treatment due to potential life-threatening complications.
  • Determine the gestational age of your pregnancy. Consult a doctor or other qualified medical professional (such as a registered nurse or sonographer) to perform an ultrasound to confirm your pregnancy and ensure it falls within the FDA’s requirement of less than 10 weeks. We offer free limited ultrasounds.
  • Understand your options. Making an informed decision about abortion can be challenging, but it is essential to know that alternatives exist. Empower yourself by exploring all available options.

Surgical Abortion

SUCTION ASPIRATION ABORTION

The most common surgical abortion is a suction aspiration procedure. It is used up to 13 weeks 6 days after a woman’s last menstrual period.

A long, thin tube is inserted into the uterus, and the fetus is suctioned out with a large syringe attached to the end of the tube.

D&E – DILATION & EVACUATION ABORTION

A D&E abortion, common in the second trimester (13+ weeks after LMP), uses local anesthesia or sedation. At 13-24 weeks, due to the fetus’s size, forceps and instruments are required along with suction. The cervix is dilated using laminaria sticks days before. During the procedure, the fetus is removed by crushing the skull and dismembering the body. Post-procedure, medication may be administered to contract the uterus and reduce bleeding.

After an Abortion

When you had your abortion, you may have had an instant sense of relief and an opportunity to move forward with your life—and perhaps that was initially true. However, you may now find yourself overwhelmed by complex emotions such as sadness, regret, shame, or confusion.

You might feel isolated, especially if your partner, family, or friends encouraged you to proceed with the abortion.

Perhaps you have kept your decision to undergo an abortion a secret for an extended period—possibly even. Yet, the emotions you are experiencing have become too burdensome to handle alone.

Alternatively, it may be your partner who decided to terminate her pregnancy, leaving you to bear the emotional weight of an abortion that was not your choice.

You don’t need to handle these emotions on your own. The BV Pregnancy Center is here to provide support during these emotional times. In order to change the way you feel and view your abortion decision, you need to give a voice to your experience. We are here to help you in any way we can.
